Buddy Ryan was an American football coach and defensive coordinator. He served 26 seasons in the NFL and won two Super Bowl championships. Ryan was born James David Ryan on February 17, 1931 in Frederick, Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma A&M University and later served in the United States Army.
CAREER
Ryan started out as an assistant coach at Gainesville High School in 1957. He was promoted to head coach in 1959. Ryan signed on as the defensive line coach of the Buffalo Bulls football team in 1961, a position he held until 1965. He briefly coached the Pacific Tigers followed by the Vanderbilt Commodores. Ryan made his AFL debut with the New York Jets in 1968. He won Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts of the NFL in 1969. He served a year as the defensive line coach of the Minnesota Vikings (1976-77).
Ryan signed on as the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears from 1978 to 1985. He created the 46 defense and led the Bears to the Super Bowl XX championship with a 46-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Ryan then served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and later the Arizona Cardinals.
