Super Bowl uniforms 2024: What jerseys will Chiefs, 49ers wear during Super Bowl 58?

August 2024 · 4 minute read

Did superstition play a part in the Chiefs' Super Bowl 58 uniform decision?

As the designated home team, Kansas City got to choose its uniform for the big game. The team wearing white has won 16 of the last 19 Super Bowls, including the Chiefs in their win over the Eagles last February. But the defending champions opted to wear red the one previous time they got to pick their Super Bowl uniform in the Patrick Mahomes era.

While the Chiefs have won in their red and white jerseys in the last five seasons, the 49ers have lost Super Bowls wearing both colors over the last 12 seasons.

Here are the Super Bowl 58 uniforms that will be worn by the Chiefs and 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Kansas City wore white pants in each of its last two Super Bowls (2020 and 2021) wearing red jerseys, so a red-on-red look is unlikely.

As a captain, Mahomes' Super Bowl jersey will have four patches in the front: a Super Bowl 58 patch, a captain's patch, a patch honoring the late Norma Hunt and the Chiefs' permanent AFL patch honoring founder Lamar Hunt.

The 49ers will wear their standard white uniforms in Super Bowl 58, ensuring that these two teams both will have the same looks as they did in Super Bowl 54 in 2020.

The 49ers reportedly petitioned the NFL to let them wear their white 90s-style throwback uniforms in Super Bowl 54, but San Francisco had to settle for its typical white jersey. It isn't clear whether the team made that attempt this time around.

The Chiefs' decision to wear red puts the 49ers in the same set they wore when they blew a 10-point lead on this stage four years ago. But the 49ers lost to the Ravens while wearing red in Super Bowl 47 just over a decade ago, so either color could bring bad luck.

Chiefs record in red uniforms

The Chiefs went 6-4 (.600) in red uniforms this season and 5-2 (.714) in white.

Kansas City wore red on kickoff night against the Lions, when the defending champions suffered a one-point loss. But the Chiefs rattled off five consecutive wins wearing red from that point. The team's next loss in red wouldn't come until Week 11, when the Eagles won at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs also dropped games to the Bills and Raiders while wearing in red before picking up a win over the shorthanded Bengals.

49ers record in white uniforms

The 49ers went 5-1 when wearing white uniforms this season and 7-4 in red. San Francisco wore its standard white uniform just five times and donned white throwbacks in a win over the Seahawks.

The Chiefs wore their Super Bowl jerseys more often than not in 2023, but the same can't be said for the 49ers, who wore white in just 35% of their games. That could be part of Kansas City's calculus in making the decision, though the Chiefs seem to lean toward red uniforms whenever they have the choice.

Chiefs Super Bowl record by uniform

The Chiefs are 2-1 when wearing red uniforms in the Super Bowl. Their first two Super Bowl victories — Super Bowl 4 and Super Bowl 54 — both came in red uniforms, but Kansas City lost Super Bowl 55 while donning red.

The Chiefs wore white in Super Bowl 1 and Super Bowl 57, losing the former but winning the latter.

49ers Super Bowl record by uniform

The 49ers have played in seven Super Bowls, but they have worn white in just two of them. San Francisco is 1-1 while wearing white in the Super Bowl.

The 49ers defeated the Broncos, 55-10, in Super Bowl 24 while donning white uniforms, a monumental win to earn back-to-back championships, but the 'Niners lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 54 in white.

As Kyle Shanahan said after the NFC championship game, the 49ers have unfinished business against Kansas City. His team will be set up with the exact same uniform matchup as in 2020 as San Francisco tries to win its first Super Bowl in 29 years.
