Is Steve Harwell Dead

Steve Harwell, the lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock group Smash Mouth, has passed away at 56 years old, as confirmed by his manager Robert Hayes. Harwell’s demise occurred on September 4, 2023, at his residence in Boise, Idaho, where he was surrounded by loved ones.

He had been receiving hospice care due to health complications, with liver failure being the cause of death.

Harwell was renowned for his distinctive voice and captivating persona, which catapulted Smash Mouth to stardom during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The band achieved several chart-topping hits, including “All Star,” “I’m a Believer,” “Walkin’ on the Sun,” and “Then the Morning Comes.”

Smash Mouth also left an indelible mark on pop culture with their songs featured in the animated film Shrek and its subsequent sequels.

Harwell’s musical journey commenced as a rapper in San Jose, California, with the group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). Following the dissolution of the group, he teamed up with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul Delisle to establish Smash Mouth in 1994.

Their debut album, Fush Yu Mang, in 1997 spawned their inaugural number one hit, “Walkin’ on the Sun.” Their second album, Astro Lounge, released in 1999, was even more successful, selling over three million copies and giving rise to their most iconic track, “All Star.” The band continued to release albums and tour until 2021, when Harwell announced his retirement due to health concerns.

Harwell’s manager, Hayes, hailed him as “a genuine American original” and a “larger-than-life figure who soared like a Roman candle.”

He commended Harwell’s unwavering determination to pursue his musical aspirations, his irrepressible charm, and fearless ambition. Hayes also noted Harwell’s deep affection for fans and performing, stating that his musical legacy will endure.

Steve Harwell is survived by his wife, Michelle Laroque, and his son, Presley Scott Harwell. He leaves behind his bandmates and countless fans who will fondly remember him. Rest in peace, Steve Harwell. You will forever be remembered as an “all star.”
