Alan Colmes was an American radio host, liberal pundit, writer and television personality. He was best known for hosting ‘The Alan Colmes Show’ on Fox News Radio and ‘Hannity & Colmes’ on the Fox News Channel. Colmes was born on September 24, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised Jewish and his grandparents were from Ukraine. Colmes attended Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.
CAREER
Colmes worked briefly at the radio station ‘WRHU’ while he was attending Hofstra. He began his radio career in 1979 and by 1982 he was hired by New York’s WABC. Colmes worked with WNBC from 1987 to 1988. His radio talk show was syndicated nationwide starting in 1990. He’s also worked with stations in Connecticut and Boston.
Colmes began his tenure with Fox News in 1996. He co-hosted the political program ‘Hannity & Colmes’ alongside Sean Hannity. The debate-driven talk show ran from October 1996 to January 2009 on the Fox News Channel. Colmes interviewed a number of political figures including Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Jesse Jackson. He hosted the nationally syndicated program ‘The Alan Colmes Show’ from 2003 to 2017. He’s also contributed to The O’Reilly Factor, Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld and Fox News Watch.
Colmes’ book of political essays, Red, White & Liberal: How Left Is Right & Right Is Wrong, was published in 2003 by Harper Collins. A second publication, Thank The Liberals**For Saving America, was published in 2012 by Hay House.
