Hi everyone, it’s time for another review! After 8 months of patient waiting, last year’s christmas present from myself to myself is finally here – the first and possibly only-ever figure of Ramattra! I was super excited for this figure, so I went full in and snapped pics along with unboxing. Might be odd to review a figure that’s not allowed on mfc, but in the future hopefully!
As a little preface I want to say that this is my first figure from Blizzard. Other’s from OW they’ve released before looked varying degrees of bad, with dull, splotchy paint, faces completely deformed compared to the protype, and more. Those were about 1/7 scale figures of human characters however. This Ramattra has big, bold shapes, and no human face that could collapse. So I decided to go for it, since I felt there were way less risk points for the figure to turn out bad – and well I was pretty much right! While there are some freestyle painting issues, which I expected anyway, he turned out really nice looking!
Let’s look at the puppet master who cursed my d-, who made me come back to OW, shall we?
First up is the box, which is really nice imho! Apart from the corrugated cardboard structure, but hey - I much prefer simple cardboard boxes over those super fancy ones that weigh a ton. The box is matte, with lots of gold foil stamping and spot gloss over the “omnicode runes”.
I love the little flavor text that talks to you as you open the box flap!
Something interesting to note is that the box is shipped in its “production” cardboard box, which is far from discreet, as it discloses the contents of the package to everyone who handles it (eh.... I definitely prefer plain cardboard).
Apparently my figure is numbered 20 of 300, whatever that means! These aren’t limited afaik.
Anyway, inside the actual figure box Ramattra is securely trapped in his white stryofoam brick prison.
To prevent scratches & paint transfers, he’s wrapped in lots of, not plastic sheets, but what is essentially parchment paper. While this did work as intended on the figure itself, unfortunately the matte coating on the base didn’t seem happy about it. There are lots of superficial glossy spots where the coating rubbed off. But the most visible spot is on the back fortunately. I was surprised how heavy he is – 2kg and 224g!
Now that the chonky boi is free, here’s a 360° turnaround:
(Note: I was too lazy to fix a lil photo editing mistake that I made. The red bleed around the purple paint that you see in the first few photos is not actually there, oop.)
He is indeed very chonky! I love how menacing he looks with his arms crossed, about to transform into his Nemesis Form. For the non-OW people: It’s a form he can temporarily switch into, where he becomes bulkier and grows a second pair of huge arms... to punch people in the face : D. And his ribbon cable hair, which is usually neatly tucked around his neck, starts floating upwards, which is very cute imho.
The purple triangles that you see aim to replicate the particle effect which is both part of his transformation and attack / skills animations. Tbh if they had wanted to make this figure truly great, they could have gone all out with this, and make his base a vortex of particles that he emerges from – but I like the suble effect too.
Something I really enjoy about this figure is the very pleasing mix of different finishes and paints, that make everything look “whole”. The super glossy triangles (I love the ones on his “hair” especially, they remind me of stained glass), the matte of his cape / clothing parts, the smooth metallic look of his body, the high-gloss pearly paint of his jaw and the matte glittery paint of his “hair” – makes my eyes happy!
Interestingly, the figure also takes some artistic liberty when it comes to certain details (and deviates from the prototype, which was more on-model in the painting department), like the glossy black parts of his body being rendered in a slightly darker silver metallic color, or the extra cable clips on two of his ribbon cable “hair” strands. I generally welcome when such liberties are taken, but I here I do lament the loss of his signature red “hair” streak. It’s a small but important detail that makes Ramattra Ramattra. I think that’s my only criticism regarding the design of the figure.
Screenshots for comparison:
I also mentioned some splotchy paint issues: this little metal part and the two dark lines here arguably have it the worst, but you actually don’t notice it from a normal viewing distance.
Apart from that, the paintwork is clean enough to satisfy me. I also appreciate that they actually made a positive change in regards to paint / assembly from the prototype. On the prototype it looked like the face plate and purple jaw were merely painted on, resulting in uneven edges which did not look very flattering and took away from the sharp, robotic look of Ramattra’s face. On the final prouct however, those are separate parts that are painted and then glued on, eliminating any potential of mishaps. And it adds a bit more three-dimensionality to the face as well. A nice win-win!
Something I really enjoy are the small details of his hands & wrist.
Look at him! Now he’s sitting next to my desk, motivating me for work with his menacing aura. Thank you Rama for your service! : D
And thank you for reading!
